These designs are based on petroglyphs located on the China Lake Naval Weapons Station, near Ridgecrest, California. The area, in the Coso Range region, a portion of the Northern Mojave Desert between the Sierra Nevada and Death Valley, is known to have been inhabited by Western Shoshonean tribes.
The petroglyphs are anthropomorphs, or intricately patterned representations of creatures with human and animal characteristics. Some archaeologists believe that they may represent regional shaman who specialized in rain-making magic.
Moira Hahn's art has been featured in Time Magazine (including a cover), Juxtapoz, The New Yorker, Cosmopolitan, the New York Times, in BoingBoing, and in numerous exhibitions at galleries and museums in the United States, Canada and Japan.
